Why I became a Chiropractor

by Derek A. Niehaus, D.C.

I knew when I was 12 years old that I wanted to become a Chiropractor. One day at track practice, I started experiencing tension and pain in my lower back, which made it to run. By the end of practice that day, the pain was so severe that I could hardly walk. When I got home, my parents took me to see a Chiropractor.

I didn't know what to expect. I had only watched the Chiropractor adjust my mom once before. I explained the tension and pain I had been experiencing, and he instantly seemed to know what was wrong. He laid me down on my side, and as he twisted my body, I felt and heard a pop. When I stood up, and the pain and tension had vanished.

Fascinated by the experience, I asked him what he had just done. He explained to me that my pelvis had gotten out of position and was stuck there. He put it back into alignment so it could move again. After that I started getting adjustments a few times a year. Already knowing I wanted to be a Chiropractor someday, I asked a lot of questions every time I saw him. He guided me in the right direction to get me where I am today.

While I have a great deal of respect for my family’s Chiropractor, Dr. Bill Mayer, but there was a lot he didn't tell me and the rest of his patients. When I got to Logan College of Chiropractic I quickly learned that Chiropractic wasn't just for pain and headaches and other symptoms, but every health concern known to man.

While Logan College taught me how to adjust patients and educated me with the knowledge needed to know to pass the board exams, my real Chiropractic education began when I started reading the Green Books, a collection of text books written by D.D. and B.J. Palmer, the fathers of Chiropractic. Reading the Green Books lead me to listen to audio of some of the legendary Chiropractors of modern time, such as Reggie Gold and Richard Santo. These great men shaped my beliefs and identity as a Chiropractor.
